You might have catapulted into caregiving because your senior had an emergency of some sort, but what do you do now that the emergency is over? Finding your footing is not as complicated as it might seem at first. Take a deep breath and then you can start tackling tasks one at a time in the order of their importance.
Maintain Good Relationships with Her Medical Team
After the emergency, your elderly family member may go back to being the primary communicator with her doctor and with other medical providers. But as her primary caregiver, you also need to maintain strong relationships with these groups. This allows you to stay in the loop should another emergency crop up.
Assess Her Safety Risks
Depending on the emergency your senior faced, she may have some challenges to face afterward. Make sure that you take the time to evaluate what types of safety risk are going to confront your aging family member. The more prepared that you are, the safer you can help your senior to be both now and in the future.
Keep Yourself as Organized as Possible
There is so much to remember as a caregiver. In fact, there’s no way that you can reasonably expect yourself to remember everything that you need to know and do. Finding a way to keep yourself and the information you need organized is vital. Some might find a planner helps, while others might find that a simple spiral notebook is enough to do the job. Find what works for you.
Get Help Wherever You Can
When you first become a caregiver, you might not realize how much help there really is out there. If you’ve got family and friends who can help, put them to work. If not, there are still agencies for the elderly, in-home care providers, and support groups. Make use of all of the resources that you can find in order to make caregiving easier for you and for your aging adult.
You don’t have to be perfect as a caregiver in order to be effective. Cut yourself some slack and remember that you’re doing the best that you can with the situation you’ve got.
