You may not be able to avoid all frustration as a family caregiver, but you can learn how to recognize and manage your frustration before it gets the better of you.
Learn What Frustration Looks Like for You
When you’re more in tune with yourself, you are better able to respond in the proper way to help yourself resolve your own issue. In the case of frustration, understanding and learning what that looks like for you before you’re over-the-top frustrated is essential. It allows you to defuse situations before they get to a state where they might blow up.
Take a Minute to Yourself
Now that you know what to look for, how you respond is key. For starters, take a minute or two to take a deep breath and calm down. Sometimes just having that little bit of time to refocus and to remove yourself from the immediate situation can do absolute wonders.
Reframe Your Thoughts
When you’re ready to revisit the situation that spiked your frustration, try reframing your thoughts. What you want to do is not remind yourself that you’re frustrated. Look for the silver lining in the situation or the aspects that might not be as bad as they first appeared. If you have a difficult time doing this in the moment, take time when you’re calm and make a list of what frustrates you typically and what could be a way to reframe your thinking. Then, when you’re next in that situation, reference your list.
Learn How to Ask for What You Need, When You Need It
One big source of frustration for a family caregiver is not having the help you need when you need it. Learn how to ask your friends and family for what you need, but do so in a positively assertive manner. This means you’re not using guilt or manipulation to get what you want. Let them know what you need help with and how they can help. If they can’t do what you need, look for other solutions.
This is a learning process, so don’t be upset with yourself if it feels like you’ve failed right out of the gate. You can still do better next time.
