Having some time outside every day can help your elder loved one to feel more connected with the world around her. It can also give her plenty of fresh air and sunlight, both of which are incredibly beneficial for your loved one.
Introduce Fresh Air on a Variety of Levels
If your elder loved one has isolated herself for a while, she may not be excited about the idea of being outside. Introducing the idea of fresh air and outside on smaller levels can help quite a bit. Open windows to let fresh air in or bring the outside in by bringing in cut flowers or plants. Set up a bird feeder near your loved one’s window so that she can see and hear the birds as they grab something to eat. Every little bit can help.
Take Shorter Trips at First
Try taking shorter excursions outside with your elder loved one at first. Little trips out to a patio, porch, or garden can get your loved one interested in being outside more. A walk to the mailbox can do the same. The idea is to keep your loved one intrigued about what is going on in the outside world and how good the sun and air can feel.
Extend Those Trips to Longer Visits Outside
Once the shorter trips are successful, your loved one might be interested in longer trips. Try taking a walk around the neighborhood or driving to a local park and sitting on a bench. Your loved one can probably start expressing other ideas for outings that she’d like to take at this point. If you live near scenic areas, you might want to start planning trips that last an hour or two.
Introduce Mobility Aids that Can Help
Some elder loved ones are reluctant to go out and about more often because they’re not as mobile as they used to be. Mobility aids, such as canes, walkers, and even scooters can help your loved one to be outside much more easily. Figure out which mobility aids can be most beneficial to your loved one and introduce them along with the outings.
If you’re not able to get outside with your loved one as much as you’d like, consider hiring elder care providers who can go with your loved one.
