Moving can be extremely stressful and challenging for anyone, but this can be particularly true for an elderly adult, and for you as their family caregiver. Not only are you dealing with the basic challenges associated with moving, but you must also cope with any challenges and issues your senior faces on a daily basis as well. Taking the time to plan ahead and put some basic preparations into place for the day of the move can make moving day smoother, easier, and less stressful for everyone involved.
Use these moving day tips for a smoother move for your elderly parent:
- Be as organized as possible before moving day. The more preparation you do ahead of time, including packing, arranging, and marking boxes, the easier it will be to do the actual move.
- Use an easy strategy to mark the boxes and the rooms at the new house. For example, use a large piece of colored tape on each box and place a piece of paper or other large piece of tape in the same color on the coordinating room to make it easy to disperse the boxes.
- Pack an overnight bag for your senior for moving day. This should include one or more complete changes of clothing, toiletries including toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, etc, a shower kit, pajamas, any medications they must take, and some simple entertainment for their new home.
- Have snacks and beverages readily available throughout the day, but also be sure to plan a time to take a break, and have a set meal.
- Consider having your parent’s elder care provider bring your parent on an outing or activity during the most intensive periods of the day, such as when the furniture is being moved.
- Have a task for your parent to do. This is especially important if they are living with cognitive functioning decline. Having something specific for them to do helps to keep their mind active and engaged, acts as a form of distraction, and can keep them calmer and safer.
If your aging parent has developed new challenges and symptoms, your own personal limitations have made it so you are no longer able to meet their needs, or you simply feel they would benefit from more diverse care, now may be the ideal time for you to consider starting elder care for them. With elder care, professional care provider can step in to fill care gaps, support an independent and fulfilling lifestyle, and help your senior stay as safe and healthy as possible throughout their later years.
As their family caregiver, knowing your aging parent has an elder home care services provider in the home with them can give you a tremendous sense of peace of mind, and confidence. With this type of care, you know your parent is in good hands both when you are with them, and when you are not.
