Elderly Care Cambridge MA
Being a family caregiver can often mean that you worry about your elderly loved one all of the time. But worry can’t be your default mode, so it’s important to check some practical items off of your list in order to help both you and your elderly loved one to feel safer, whether you’re right there with her or not.
Get Her Hearing and Vision Checked Regularly
There are multiple factors that can go into helping your elderly loved one to stay safe at home, but one of her biggest defenses is her ability to sense danger around her so that she can avoid it. Most people sense danger in their vicinity by using one or more of their five senses. In your elderly loved one’s case, if her hearing or her eyesight aren’t working properly, that can spell big trouble. Make it a point to have both checked as often as you can so you can spot issues early. Talk to your loved one’s doctor about ways to help her compensate if one or more of her senses are not working as well as they should be.
Double Check the Fit of Any Assistive Devices
Another issue that your elderly loved one could run into is improper fit with any of her assistive devices. These types of devices can include anything from hearing aids or eyeglasses to walkers or even corrective footwear. Make sure that you have a solid understanding about how all of your loved one’s assistive devices work and how they are supposed to fit her so that you can quickly identify potential problems and get them corrected.
Talk to Her about Using a Personal Alert System
Personal alert systems usually involve a series of devices that enable your elderly loved one to call for help in the event of an emergency. At least one of these devices is usually a pendant or lanyard of some type that your loved one is able to easily wear around her neck. If she ever needs emergency help, she simply presses the button and an operator sends whatever assistance she needs. Talk to your elderly loved one before going this route so that she can feel like part of the discussion. If you don’t, she might resent the device and avoid wearing it.
Hire Elderly Care Providers
For significant peace of mind, you can’t beat hiring experienced elderly care providers. They can stay with your elderly loved one while you’re away and perform a variety of tasks for her. If you simply need someone to provide companionship for your loved one, they can do that, too. The key here is that your elderly loved one is not alone and you can focus on whatever else you need to be doing.
