Elderly Care Needham MA
One of the things you’ll find yourself doing as a family caregiver is managing your elderly loved one’s wardrobe. If you can learn some of the tricks now, it’ll be easier for you to deal with your loved one’s clothing in a way that’s best for both of you.
Look for Clothes Made from Soft, Comfortable Materials
When you spot a piece of clothing that might work for your loved one, feel the material. If it’s scratchy or stiff, chances are that it’s not going to be comfortable when your loved one puts it on. You want to look for comfortable clothing make from soft, natural materials, such as cotton. Take a peek at the care label to double check the composition and how to care for the fabric before buying it.
Look for Elastic Waistbands
Elastic waistbands can be much easier for your loved one to deal with on her own and they can be far more comfortable for her to wear. They’re also easy for you to manage if you’re helping her in the bathroom on a daily basis. Double check the elastic to make sure that it’s secure but not too tight when the garment is on your loved one.
Choose Clothing that Fastens in the Front
Another important clothing item for your loved one, especially if you are helping her to get dressed, is that the fastenings are easy for you to access. This most often means clothing that fastens in the front. Clothing that fits over your loved one’s head can be easy to put on first thing in the morning, but may be more difficult to manage in the bathroom later.
Pick Colors that Work Together
If you can, try to pick colors that work well together. This gives you and your loved one more options for mixing and matching clothing. Picking lots of patterns or colors that are dramatically different can make getting dressed a little more limiting for your loved one. This also helps you if you’re grabbing clothing in a hurry in the morning.
Buy Extras if Your Loved One Likes the Outfit
When you and your loved one find an outfit or a piece of clothing that fits particularly well or that she really enjoys wearing, consider picking up an extra. This allows you to have a backup in case that item becomes damaged or even if your loved one simply wants to wear that outfit more often.
Talk to your loved one’s elderly care providers about how to help your loved one get dressed with a minimum of frustration for you both.
