Often family caregivers find themselves thrust into caregiving without much notice. Even if you do have a little bit more warning, caregiving is going to change your life in ways that you’re not going to expect. So how do you get used to this new normal for your life?
Find Community Resources
Every community, even a small one, has resources that can help you and your elderly loved one to weather the new journey you’re on. It’s important to get in touch with county agencies as well as agencies that help elderly citizens to find out what is available to you in your area. Joining a senior center can help your loved one to socialize, too.
Educate Yourself about Your Elderly Loved One’s Health
Your loved one’s health is going to dictate quite a bit about your caregiving journey together, so it’s important that you’re informed. Establish a good relationship with your elderly loved one’s doctor. But don’t stop there. Learn what you can about your loved one’s health conditions by checking the library, the Internet, and even by joining support groups that are devoted to those specific health conditions.
Plan Ahead as Much as You Can
When it comes to caregiving, there is some planning ahead that you can do, especially if you and your loved one’s doctor have an idea what kind of care she’ll need in the future. It’s important to remember, however, that you’re only going to be able to plan ahead so far or with so much accuracy. Keep in mind that you’ll need to monitor and adjust periodically.
Get Help and Take Care of Yourself
Being a family caregiver is demanding stuff. Talk to other family members about pitching in and accept their help when they offer it. Give up on the idea of perfection, if that’s what is holding you back from accepting help. Hiring elderly care providers can also give you the space and the time that you need in order to make sure you’re taking care of your own emotional and physical well being.
As you and your elderly loved one gain your “sea legs,” the caregiving journey will start to feel more comfortable.
