Home Care Services Norwood MA
Some elderly loved ones who develop depression may not want to take medication to resolve the issue. There can be a lot of different reasons for that, and it’s worth exploring some of these other avenues, even if your loved one is open to trying the medication route.
Add Some Routines to Her Day
If your loved one has a schedule and a series of routines that she can follow each day, that gives her a little more control over her day. Try to include activities that she enjoys as well as activities that help her to branch out a little.
Help Her Begin Exercising
Exercise can help quite a bit with depression, but you need to make sure that your loved one is healthy enough to be able to exercise safely. A regular exercise program can help to improve your loved one’s mood, sleep better, and give her a boost in energy.
Make Sure She Has a Purpose
Not having a sense of purpose can contribute to depression for your elderly loved one. If your loved one enjoys helping people, try finding ways that she can volunteer or give back to the community. Even the smallest activities can help to give your loved one a sense of purpose, so look for activities that she enjoys.
Consider Counseling
Talking to a therapist or counselor can help your loved one quite a bit. This is especially important if your loved one is depressed due to feelings of grief or due to a health crisis she’s experiencing. Setting aside regular time for counseling can help your loved one to work through the feelings that she’s dealing with and therefore process them in a healthy manner.
Look for Support Groups
Support groups can be tremendously helpful for your loved one. Depending on the type of group, they can help her to feel less alone and they can also give her an outlet for socializing. Try finding support groups that your loved one feels comfortable attending. If there aren’t any in the area that are a good fit, consider online support groups, too.
Your loved one’s elderly home care services providers can help you figure out a schedule for your loved one and fill that schedule with meaningful activities.
