Home Care Services Wellesley MAFor some, recovery following a hospitalization may take weeks or even months. In some cases it could be a year or more before an individual is back to some semblance of normalcy in life. There are many factors that will ultimately determine whether a person regains full mobility in life, and doing whatever they can in those first days and weeks after they have been discharged from the hospital can be integral in the entire process.

Setting goals can help tremendously.

If a person doesn’t have goals or if they don’t have specific dates by which they want to accomplish certain goals, it can be difficult to track success. For example, if a person establishes a goal of being able to get out of bed without assistance in three weeks, they will probably work a little harder during physical therapy or doing other exercises to regain strength.

If somebody just goes along and figures, “whenever I can,” they might not push themselves as hard and that can slow down recovery and actually increase the risk of a hospital readmission.

Focus on short-term versus long-term goals.

What are short-term goals? They should be daily and weekly goals. These goals might have to do with lifting a certain amount of weight, being able to get out of bed on your own, being able to walk down the hall with the assistance of a walker to start, then using a cane, then without any physical support from a home care services aide or other caregiver.

A long-term goal can include gardening once again, playing golf, going for a walk in the park, spending time with friends, and so on.

Setting goals can keep people focused.

When a person has goals in front of them, it helps to encourage them to push through different challenges. If they don’t see the goals, if they’re not thinking about them, it’s easier to avoid certain activities such as exercise or focusing on their diet.

It helps you see progress.

By establishing goals, it’s easier to see progress as it happens. When you’re caught in the middle of a situation, when it seems as though nothing is getting better, and it may even feel like things are getting worse, you can look at the goals, track your progress, and see how things have actually been improving.

Sitting in the middle of this is like standing in the middle of a forest. You can see the trees, but you can’t see the immenseness of what surrounds you.
