Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIAs) are often referred to as mini-strokes. They are very brief—usually lasting only a minute or two—and leave no lasting after-effects. For this reason, many who experience them do not get the medical attention they need. A TIA warrants immediate medical attention. According to the American Stroke Association, one-third of people who experience a TIA will have a stroke within a year.

The Signs

The Signs are similar to a stroke and include:

Slurred or garbled speech. This can be minimal—you may barely notice that they are not talking quite right. It can also be severe—you cannot make out any of the words that they are saying.

Weakness or numbness on one side of the body. This can manifest as drooped facial expressions on one side of the face. If they smile, only one side of their mouth will raise. They may not be strong enough to raise their arm up in the air. If they do, it may drift down.

Blindness or change of vision in one or both eyes.

Dizziness or loss of balance.

Take Action

This is a warning sign. They are caused by a blockage or blood clot in the brain and emergency medical care is required. Fortunately, your parent’s body resolved the clot on its own, but you will want to have your parent assessed to determine if they are at risk for a full-blown stroke. There are actions they can take now to help prevent one in the future.

Risk Factors

Several lifestyle choices increase the risk for developing TIAs and strokes. These include diets high in saturated fats and Trans fats and low in fruits and vegetables. Lack of exercise is also associated with a higher chance of experiencing a stroke. Smoking and excess intake of alcohol also put a person at an increased risk. Diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol are all associated with strokes. All of these can be controlled with a good dietary plan an exercise regime.

Home Care Provider

If your loved one needs assistance or motivation, consider obtaining the services of a home care provider. Not only can they assist with the daily activities of living, they can prepare brain-healthy meals and accompany your parent on walks. They can provide transportation to the local senior community center to take part in exercise classes and to their various appointments. They can do the grocery shopping, run errands and provide that all-important aspect of caring—companionship.
