Often when seniors are discharged from the hospital it happens quickly. Family caregivers may not have a lot of time to prepare for a senior loved one coming home after a medical event, a fall, or surgery. Post-hospital care services for seniors are the best way to make sure that your senior parent is taken care of while they recover at home after a hospital stay.
If your senior loved one has been in the hospital and they are being discharged to return home you should do these 4 things before you bring your senior parent home:
Get Post-Hospital Care
With post-hospital care, seniors will have someone with them who can do things like clean up the house, make them healthy meals and make sure they eat, and make sure they take their medications on top. A care provider can also help your senior loved one get to the bathroom or get in and out of bed.
Make Sure The House Is Stocked
Before your senior parent comes home fill the house with food and drinks so that the post-hospital care provider will have plenty of healthy food they can cook for your senior loved one. It’s also a good idea to stock up on snacks in case your senior parent doesn’t feel like eating a full meal and would prefer to just graze on snacks throughout the day. Make sure there are some high-protein snacks like yogurt so you can be sure your senior parent is getting enough protein.
Pick Up Their Medications
It’s also a good idea to make sure that your senior parent’s medications are all refilled and waiting when they come home. You may have to pick up new prescriptions too if the doctor has prescribed new medications while your senior parent was in the hospital. If you have any concerns or questions about the medications that your senior parent is taking ask your questions because you take your senior loved one home. It’s also a good idea to keep a binder or a notebook listing all the medications that your senior parents are taking and when they need to take each medication. That way you and the post-hospital care provider will both know when your senior parent should be taking medications.
Make Sure They Have a Comfortable Place To Recuperate
The last thing that you should do before your senior parent comes home from the hospital is make sure they have a comfortable and cozy place to recover. You may want to make up a bed for them in a central room like the living room and let them recuperate there close to the kitchen and the bathroom. Or you may want to turn their upstairs bedroom into a cozy sanctuary where they can recover by putting a TV in there and fixing up the bed nicely. If your senior parent wants to stay upstairs in their bedroom put a mini-fridge in the room to hold cold water and juices.
