Winter is coming and for many that means monthly expenses increase. Heating bills can put a strain on a budget when you live on a fixed income. Keeping heating bills down is important.
Here are some tips on cutting heating bills this winter.
Fill Gaps and Boost Insulation
Look around the house and find gaps where cold drafts may enter. Common spots are around window sills, older exterior doors, and pipes and wires that enter the home from outside. If you spot any gaps, seal them with foam weatherstripping or exterior caulking.
Add Plastic to Older Windows and Patio Doors
Older patio doors and windows can let in drafts. It’s expensive to replace these items, but if it’s a possibility, it’s worth the cost. If it’s not possible, look for window and patio door insulating kits. Using two-sided tape, you secure the plastic over the door or window. Use a hair dryer to shrink the plastic to form a tight seal.
Get the Heating System Cleaned and Inspected
Make sure the heating system is cleaned and inspected. A clean furnace or boiler is going to work efficiently and save fuel. If the air filter hasn’t been replaced, make sure you do that every two to three months depending on the filter size.
Call Around for Fuel Rates
Your dad may be able to get a better rate for heating fuel. Shop around. If you get a lower quote, go back to the company your dad currently uses and see if they will match that rate. If not, it may be time to switch companies.
Join a Neighborhood Group or Co-op
One of the easiest ways to get a lower rate is by joining a group. When multiple people are buying fuel together, companies offer bulk rates. The discount can lead to huge savings. You may see if your father’s neighborhood has a group rate. If not, see if there are local co-ops in the area. Fuel buying groups is another term to search when looking for co-ops or neighborhood groups.
Use those savings to make sure your dad has help around the home. Winter poses new challenges to seniors aging at home. Slower reaction times impact driving on wintry roads. Senior care aides can drive your dad to stores and medical appointments.
With a senior care provider helping out, your dad is also going to be engaged and social. Talk to a senior care agency today to discuss the other ways your dad can have help around the home this winter.
