Most seniors who choose to age in place put some things on the back burner. For example, they may not realize how important it is for them to take care of their feet and even toenails. The truth is your feet play a huge role in mobility and if they are always in pain, dry, or hurting it can be a pain to move around as a senior. Personal care at home providers can help a senior with basic things that will also include foot care.
Personal care at home may help a senior bathe, towel off, moisturize, and dress appropriately. This means your senior will have someone help them if they can’t wash their feet and a senior will always know they can put socks and shoes on with the right assistance which is part of foot care.
Here are some other ways a senior should be taking care of their feet.
Find the Right Shoes
Shoes that do not fit right will cause an enormous amount of pain, especially for seniors. Shoes that are too narrow can cause swelling and pain, shoes that are too loose can cause blisters or worse they can slip and cause a fall. Your senior loved one may need to give up looking for more practical shoes as they age which can help them remain more mobile and safe. The right shoes should be easy to get on and should be comfortable to walk around in. If they are always in pain, they need new shoes. This is not something a senior should forget and it is often something they never think about because there always seem to be more pressing matters when it comes to health.
Go Get Pedicures
Seniors may give up driving which means they do not go out as much as they used to, this also may mean they do not think about going to get pedicures. However, this is one of the best ways to keep aging feet as healthy as possible. They will help with things like soaking feet, ingrown toenails, and keeping nails short but clean. Pedicures will also help a senior from having dry and cracked skin on the bottom of their feet.
Find a Foot Doctor
A foot doctor is also called a podiatrist and they will help a senior figure out what is wrong with their feet, especially if they are always in pain. They may evaluate a seniors stance and see if they need insoles or they may inspect a seniors feet to figure out if there are any infections or alignment issues. Once a foot doctor understands the problem they will help your senior manage any foot pain or issues that arise. They are not your average doctor and seniors may not think about going to a podiatrist but it can be important as they age in place.
Stretch Your Feet
Most people don’t think about stretching their feet but it is one of the best ways to keep feet healthy and relaxed. Stretching feet can help reduce tension and help a senior keep on their feet for a lot longer. This is something they should do every day.
